Buy a Bag for a Family in Need

from $9.50

During this economic recession, as folks have lost work, have medical expenses, or have indirectly suffered from Covid-related financial predicaments, food insecurity has become a major issue for many families in the NC Piedmont. We are constantly being contacted for food donations by various organizations, but due to our tight profit margins we often have to turn these opportunities down. If you would like to help us, any extra funds that we can raise for this cause will be used to give our food away to folks in need.

So far, since beginning of this endeavor, with the help of customers, we have donated 541 pounds of our grains to individuals and families linked with the following organizations:

-Legal Aid North Carolina, Durham clients. Legal Aid works with low-income individuals and families across the state of North Carolina who cannot afford a lawyer on civil legal issues like domestic violence, education justice, and housing eviction.

-Families with Refugee Status who are receiving services from UNC Refugee Wellness, an organization that promotes equitable access of mental health services to individuals and families with refugee status.

-Families who live at McDougald Terrace, the largest public housing site in Durham with residents who were recently displaced due to a public health crisis caused by negligence of repairs by the Durham Housing Authority.

-Carolina Outreach clients. Carolina Outreach is a community-based mental health agency in Durham that provides a variety of mental health services to individuals and families, and those who are uninsured or have Medicaid.

-Individuals and families with Local queer exchange, a mutual aid group for queer folx in the Triangle. The group aims to support and address each other’s needs, like food security, collectively as a community.

-Siembra, Durham County and Alamance County members. Siembra is an organization of Latinx people defending their rights & building power “with papers and without papers” with member leadership teams.

-Comunidad de Durham is a community of Hispanic/Latinx families whose children attend Durham Public Schools. The group aims to provide support as families navigate the barriers of access to inclusion of the school system and the broader community.

-La Semilla is a Durham group that strives to be present in service with the Hispanic/Latinx community, along with the larger immigrant community in Durham, NC and its surrounding areas.

-El Vinculo in Siler City, whose mission is to foster intercultural understanding and to empower Hispanics to overcome the challenges they face and make their voices heard in the community.

-East Durham Children’s Initiative clients. EDCI’s mission is to create a pipeline of high-quality services from birth through high school graduation for children and families living in a 120-block area of East Durham.

-Durham Neighbors Free Lunch Initiative, which provides healthy, accessible meals for anyone who is food insecure. Their focus is Durham Public Schools students, Durham’s homeless population, and workers who have been laid off in relation to COVID-19, but they serve all who are in need. 200 meals per day, 5 days per week.

-Feed Durham, which is a mutual aid group made of community members, restaurants, farms, and local businesses in an effort to support folx through these difficult times. In the words of founder/lead organizer, Katina Parker, “We fed elders, families living in cars and on the streets, widows, unsupported LGBTQ+ folks, undocumented families, elementary students and their families. We turned no one away.”

-The Mustard Seed Project, is a small non-profit neighborhood collective in Durham, offering food, resources and dignity to neighbors during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
